The Maidstone District now has its own website (Maidstone District OnLine) which provides loads of stuff about meetings, practices and so on. This is maintained by Roy Barclay and is accessible directly by clicking on the link above. Give it a go and let Roy know what you think. The KCACR site will continue to publish odd snippets, but the really up-to-the-minute stuff will be accessible via the link above.

News from Ulcombe

Charles Tassell of Ulcombe writes (10 October 2008): I just wanted to let you know that Ulcombe have resumed regular monthly practice nights, and we now practise on the 1st Thursday of the month. We hope to build on this to weekly practices as numbers allow, but for now the Ulcombe band continue to support Hollingbourne at their practice on Mondays as well.

Ready steady ring!

Brian "Redleader" Butcher sends us this snippet, which is partly culled from the Maidstone District website.

On Wednesday 6 December 2006 Brenda Sladen (Aylesford) and Alison Gerrish (Barming/Aylesford) starred in BBC2's Ready, Steady, Cook programme. In a head to head ringers' challenge Alison "Green Pepper" Gerrish narrowly beat Brenda "Red Tomato" Sladen to take the £100 prize. Alison is donating half her winnings to the Bell Restoration Fund and the other half to the Aylesford Flush Fund for the provision of a new toilet and kitchen in the church. To add to the occasion, the show also featured a spot of festive handbell ringing by the Aylesford band.

ready steady cook cheque

Brian goes on to say, "I have now received a cheque for £50 (see photo) as a donation to the BRF.
Thanks ladies."

Otham centenary

The following item was produced by Mal Williams, tower captain at Otham.

Otham tenor

On Sunday 15 July 2006 Otham's 9.15am service "A celebration of Bells" was celebrated. The tenor at Otham was recast in 1906, 100 years ago.

Otham ringers who were present rang before the service and others took an active part in the service, doing the readings, prayers, sanctus bell, offertory, chalice and serving at the altar, and choosing all the hymns for the service.

A leaflet was produced that was handed out for those who attended to read. My sister Janet wrote a poem or an ode or call it what you will that we printed on the leaflet, and our sermon was given on all bells that call us to do something or warn us. Like a cycle bell or a level crossing bell, or time.

A number of the congregation were shown the bells after the service and it would seem that all of the leaflets were taken away. A couple who are planning their wedding at Otham may soon become new recruits.

The picture on the left shows Otham tenor. Observant viewers will note that in reality it was up at the time of the photo.

All about ringing for experts and nonringers alike

Are you an established ringer with questions about ringing that you were afraid to ask? Are you new to ringing? Are you just visiting this site by chance and would like to find out a little about this amazing bunch of people?

There is now a worldwide freeby encyclopedia on the Internet, called Wikipedia. This covers just about every topic you could ever think about, including ringers and ringing. This is written and edited by ringers, so it's far from the usual sort of stuff you find in newspapers. Try the link on the links page (or click here if you're keen to get started).
